چکیده
Acute generalized weakness has a wide differential diagnosis that includes neurologic, metabolic, and infectious aetiologies. Acute hypokalaemic paralysis is a rare but treatable cause of acute weakness. We present a 23-year old lady, with history of sudden difficulty getting up from recumbency. Her initial investigations revealed hypokalemia with nonanion gap metabolic acidosis and alkaline urine. Minor salivary gland biopsy confirmed the diagnosis to be Sjögren’s syndrome. [Primary Sjögren's syndrome and hypokalaemic paralysis--case report].
We report a case of hypokalaemic quadriparesis in 31-year old woman in whom the discovery of distal renal tubular acidosis led to the diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome. Hypokalaemic paralysis as initial manifestation of primary Sjögren's syndrome is rare, but when it occurs it may precede symptoms of xerostomia and xerophthalmia. The diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome should be consi...

Chronic ingestion of liquorice induces a syndrome with findings similar to those in primary hyperaldosteronism. We describe a patient who, with a plasma K+ of 1.8 mmol/l, showed a paralysis and severe rhabdomyolysis after the habitual consumption of natural liquorice. Liquorice has become widely available as a flavouring agent in foods and drugs. It is important for physicians to keep liquorice...

Although acute onset hypokalaemic paralysis is an uncommon cause of acute weakness, morbidity and mortality may occur due to respiratory failure and cardiac arrhythmias. Therefore it is important for a physician to have an idea regarding the underlying causes and its prompt management. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (11 beta hydroxylase de...
